How much does a tree surgeon cost?

There’s no single price for tree surgery — a small hedge trim and a large, awkward tree removal are completely different jobs. What we can do is explain the factors that genuinely affect price, so you know what to expect and what to mention when you ask for a quote.

What affects the price

Tree size and species. Larger trees take longer to work on safely, produce more material to clear, and may need more specialist rigging. Species matters too — some trees are heavier, more brittle, or grow in ways that make dismantling more involved.

Condition. A healthy tree being reduced or shaped is usually more straightforward than a dead, diseased or storm-damaged tree, which often needs extra care to work on safely.

Access. Can a vehicle get close to the tree? Is there space to bring branches down safely, or does everything need to be lowered by rope through a tight gap between buildings? Restricted access — tenement back-courts, narrow lanes, steep gardens — generally increases cost because the job takes longer and may need extra equipment or people.

Machinery required. Some jobs only need hand tools and a chainsaw; others benefit from a chipper, a stump grinder, or specialist rigging equipment. The right equipment for the job affects both time and cost.

Number of operatives. Larger or more complex jobs may need more than one qualified person on site for safety, which affects the overall price.

Waste removal. Whether branches, logs and woodchip are removed from site, left with you, or chipped on the spot all affect the final cost — removing everything takes more time and often a second vehicle trip.

Stump grinding. If you want a stump ground out after removal, this is usually quoted separately, based on stump diameter and access for the grinder.

Emergency or out-of-hours attendance. Urgent callouts for dangerous or storm-damaged trees are typically priced differently from planned work booked in advance, reflecting the need for a rapid response.

Getting an accurate quote
